Poděbrady
The spa town of Poděbrady is dominated by a château on the right-hand bank of the Elbe, which was originally an early Gothic castle of Przemysl Otakar II. The most famous member of the House of Kunštát, which owned medieval Poděbrady, was George of Poděbrady, who was elected the Czech king in 1458. “The Hussite King” submitted the other European sovereigns with a project for a general peace organisation of European states with regular meetings, an international court, and a revenue authority. From a contemporary point of view, however, it was not possible to realise this modern project in the 15th century. Apart from its spas, Poděbrady is also famous for its well-known Bohemia glassworks. Sport lovers can make use of the golf course and a number of sports grounds.
